Designing a Better World: Inside MillerKnoll’s 2025 Sustainability Progress
Sustainability matters to our clients, so it matters to us too. That makes partnering with MillerKnoll—a company that shares that same commitment—even more meaningful. We dug into their 2025 Better World Report, and here’s what stood out and why it matters.
A core message of the Better World Report is that sustainability and exceptional design go hand in hand. MillerKnoll approaches every stage of a product’s life—from idea to end of life—with the planet in mind.
Highlights include:
100% Renewable Energy Achieved Ahead of Schedule
All global manufacturing facilities now operate on renewable energy—an ambitious goal reached ahead of plan. This milestone significantly reduces operational carbon emissions and sets a strong foundation for future climate goals.
Furniture Saved from Landfills
Through design for longevity and circular programs, more than 4.2 million pounds of furniture were diverted from landfill—the equivalent of keeping over 100,000 Aeron chairs in use.
Material Innovation & Circularity
A continued shift toward recycled, bio-based, and responsibly sourced materials ensures products are designed with their next life in mind. This commitment supports a more circular economy and reduces reliance on virgin resources.
These actions reflect deeper commitments to reduce waste and emissions, advance circularity, and rethink how products are made and reused.
A Data-Driven Approach to Climate Action
Beyond these milestones, the report highlights a broader, measurable approach to climate action. MillerKnoll continues to reduce its overall carbon footprint by addressing both operational emissions and the impacts embedded within its products. From more efficient manufacturing processes to smarter material selection, sustainability is being built into every decision.
Transparency That Drives Better Decisions
Product transparency is another key focus. By expanding environmental product declarations (EPDs) and conducting more life cycle assessments, MillerKnoll is creating clearer visibility into the environmental impact of its products. This empowers clients to make more informed, responsible choices—while holding the company accountable to its own standards.
Designing Out Waste
Waste reduction efforts are also evolving. In addition to significant landfill diversion, MillerKnoll is advancing zero-waste initiatives across its facilities—minimizing manufacturing waste while increasing reuse and recycling. The goal is simple but ambitious: design systems where waste is eliminated altogether.
What Comes Next
Looking ahead, the MillerKnoll is setting its sights on even more aggressive climate targets. With science-based goals guiding the way, MillerKnoll is continuing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand renewable energy use, and engage its supply chain to address Scope 3 impacts —the emissions generated across a product’s entire lifecycle, from raw materials and manufacturing to transportation, product use, and end-of-life. Ongoing investment in sustainable materials and circular design will further increase the number of products that are recyclable or made with recycled content—reinforcing a long-term commitment to designing for the future.
A Better World, By Design
As we reflect this Earth Month on environmental progress and corporate purpose, the 2025 Better World Report offers a powerful lens into how MillerKnoll’s intentional design choices—from renewable energy to material innovation—are helping to shape a better world for all. And we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of that story.
