GreyStone Power Corporation prided itself on its close employee network, but it didn’t have enough space to celebrate like one. Apart from one large conference room, which hosted baby showers and retirement parties, the cramped 30-year old headquarters offered few other places for employees to gather. So, when it decided to move to a 194-acre campus outside of Atlanta, it engaged the local design firm Smallwood and furniture dealer Corporate Environments to create a collaboration-friendly environment designed with the intention to attract new talent and retain longtime employees. That meant striking a balance between cutting edge and traditional, as well as between open and private spaces.

BALANCING SOCIALIZING AND COLLABORATION SPACES

Socializing is equally as important as formal collaboration in an organization that fosters bonding among colleagues. A place where every style of socializing and sitting posture is supported, the café is one of the headquarters’ most popular spaces. “Although it’s one café,” Knight says, “it’s four different areas that people can all use separately.” The space— decorated in blues, blacks, and pops of citrus—offers stools for those who prefer to work or read a book at a counter, while collections of bar-height stools and café tables are well-suited for pairs. For larger group chats, there are cafe tables and side chairs, a long Rockwell Unscripted® Library Table, and even a laid-back lounge with a large sofa, upholstered armchairs, and cylindrical poufs.

Mixing different collections and brands to strike the aesthetic balance for GreyStone allowed Knoll and Corporate Environments to really answer the client’s needs holistically.

Several items were donated from Corporate Environment’s existing inventory which assisted in remaining on budget while allowing CE to play a small part in the mission of Meals on Wheels - the support senior independence through meals, shelter, education, and community.

When considering the needs of the pantry shelving, a different solution was presented than originally planned - swapping out traditional wooden shelves with a higher quality butcher block option from Iron Age products. This enhanced solution meant that the shelves could be sanded and refinished to extend the life of the shelves and create more value from their investment.

From old school to new school in just three months

The general contractor was initially skeptical that the space would be done on time. But DIRTT’s assemblies are precision manufactured to arrive on-site for a quick install. Using rich veneer, writable surfaces, and integrated displays transformed industrial looking classrooms into a welcoming and collaborative space. Student and parents were blown away when they went back to school. And at $100/square foot, Greater Atlanta wasn’t just on time, it was on budget too.

One of the challenges faced was the installation timeline; this project kicked off during the height of the pandemic. This was a phased installation spanning multiple floors, and due to supply chain issues, there were various material delays to balance. In addition to working on a tight timeline, JLL was testing the work model of whether to bring the workforce back to a five-day in-office model or adopt a hybrid one. Meeting staff needs by providing Knoll Anchor workstations with built-in Antenna planters, and extra biophilia, was a prerequisite for JLL’s employee satisfaction and productivity. The addition of biophilia design would bring comfort, improve air quality, and create a natural atmosphere for JLL’s current employees. Not only was staff wellness a major consideration, but the ability to provide high-tech meeting areas to hold onsite, hybrid, and online meetings was a necessity. Based on those expectations, our team created conference spaces and training centers where workshops could be held with both internal and external participants. With the collaboration of MillerKnoll and ASD, increasing the comfort of current staff and attracting new talent into the office will continue to be the driver of JLL’s renovation approach and end result.

DIRTT WALLS

Reduce came to us looking to relocate into a space that was modern and would motivate employees to come back to the office.  Their vision was to blend the finishes and have a flexible space interactive space that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but technology driven.  The challenge was speed of construction and making sure we built the space with integrated technology, state of the art design in a condensed schedule.  The solution included Technology, furniture and DIRTT which allowed the CE teams to coordinate and produce a beautiful functional space that thrives with creativity.

TECHNOLOGY

Base Brands had several obstacles when it came to technology. The new location did not have any network or server room, and they needed full technology integration from door access to video conference ability within the rooms. Corporate Environments installed a full network server room closet providing an enterprise Wi-Fi system to allow an internal and guest network. All the technology is integrated into the ceiling, walls, and tables for a clean look with easy access for repairs and upgrades. Corporate Environments provided cameras, speakers, and a similar integration into the tables and walls within their creative spaces. Still, they opted to add a Viewsonic Touchscreen, allowing their team to “write” on anything from PDF to PowerPoint LIVE.

FURNITURE

CE managed the entire process, from the engineering, design, installation, training, and follow-up services. Because of its exponential growth over the years, the client was concerned about hiring more people. The CE and AD studio team created an easily reconfigurable layout within the 6,500 square feet of space for future changes. The new space included 9to5 seating conference chairs, Bernhardt lounge furniture, Grand Rapids chairs, Enwork meeting table, and Artopex workstations and private offices. With the blend in manufacturer lines, Corporate Environments and AD Studio provided solutions with height adjustable for sit to stand flexibility, Phone Booths for privacy, and even a shuffleboard table for employees to use.

GIVING THE STUDENTS
WHAT THEY WANT

The goal of this new residence hall was to design a new innovative, welcoming, and collaborative space for first-year students at UGA. Coordinating with students and the university faculty, the team dedicated a whole day to setting up various furniture pieces for students to test out and conduct sit tests. This interactive approach was a huge success and more importantly, gave the students a voice in what they wanted to see in the new dorms. This project wasn’t without its challenges as no project is. Having to manage multiple manufacturer lead times resulted product delays, potentially affecting the installation timeline. Although dealing with multiple manufacturers came with challenges, it also provided an opportunity to think outside the box and introduce different products to help make the Black-Diallo Miller Hall a more inviting, comfortable, and attractive space for students.

The goal was to foster collaboration and provide flexibility for employees throughout the day, with lounge areas, additional meeting spaces, and optional work areas.

Robins Air force Base

Breaking away from the traditional government cube farms, we devised an out-of-the-box approach to transform the space completely. With the current hybrid work model for the Combat Avionic teams, 150 people share the space on different days. The previous setup of 4-man cube-style spaces was replaced with a more efficient open layout, delivering an additional 16 workstations within the same space. This afforded teams the flexibility to come into the office on a typically remote day to meet in person should they need it without displacing others already in the office.

Despite the challenge of limited budget considerations due to government funding requests, we worked closely with the client to understand their requirements and maximize the potential of the available resources. Leveraging a new AI-powered design tool, we efficiently explored multiple layout options, cutting down on design time and presenting the client with various configurations to review and fine-tune.

The transformation of the space presented various challenges that demanded unique solutions. The existing pre-World War II building posed architectural constraints, consideration of electrical infrastructure, and power distribution concerns. As we provided the electrical subcontractors for the project, we overcame these challenges by adding infrastructure to the electrical panel and installing Herman Miller Logic Reach, a modular power distribution system to bring power to the center of the room in the shortest way possible—a straight line

One of the significant aspects of the project was the integration of sound masking technology and acoustic solutions. The space was originally a warehouse back in the 40’s which means very high ceilings and lots of challenges for sound masking. To mitigate noise and provide privacy for meetings and personal conversations, we incorporated Framery booths, acoustical art on the walls, and Snowsound acoustical plants. These elements addressed acoustic challenges and created dedicated areas where employees could engage in focused work or have sensitive discussions.

The “Office of the Future” renovation showcased our ability to think creatively, challenge conventional norms, and deliver a transformative workspace. The transition from cube-style spaces to a modern workspace for 83 workstations demonstrated our commitment to innovation, listening to the client’s needs, and delivering an unmatched client experience. The result was a workspace that fostered creativity, collaboration, and productivity, transforming the client's space into a fun and inspiring hub for their team.

This building is a new, state-of-the-art outpatient facility featuring surgery, imaging, rehabilitation, orthopedics, operating rooms, a cancer center, and more. With an empty 600,000 square foot building, Grady knew it needed help designing and furnishing their new space with a partner that would keep their need for controlled costs and tight timelines in mind. Enter Corporate Environments. Our team worked countless hours alongside the facilities team to create the spaces with product standards, a few non-standard items, and carefully plan the logistics, as it was a critical piece in the execution with both the GC and PM firms.

CORRELL PAVILION

The extended timeline for construction added challenges for our team during the staging and installation process, particularly when it came to the logistics from the dock to the actual space. The solution required meticulous planning, coordination, and communication. Another challenge came in the form of dealing with various design and pricing changes from the initial specifications. With many moving parts, it pushed the team to think creatively and overcome these obstacles as they arose.

Today, Correll Pavilion provides patients with all operative procedures, including pre-operative and post-operative care. The newly renovated building has increased surgical capacity and is equipped with the latest technology and medical equipment. For example, the 7th floor houses the new Radiology, Orthopedics Center, and Physical Therapy layout, allowing for improved care coordination and doubling patient rooms from 12-13 to 24-25.

Working on a massive project like Grady required a fully invested team, and our Corporate Environments team delivered. Due to the high demand for surgery space and revenue generation, every team member had to wear multiple hats and communicate as one to ensure the project was successfully completed and ready to go live. Our team's ability to manage the overall spending plan for furniture through the Facilities Development team facilitated a smooth planning process over the three-year timeline. Comprising a strong cast of women, our team worked collaboratively to achieve the project's goals from concept through completion.

When Quikrete's team was invited to explore our showroom, the showcased systems workstations had a profound impact, outweighing concerns about the thickness of the drywall solutions. Witnessing the potential of rows of gallery panels to attract and retain employees and recognizing the possibility of filling the remaining space with additional workstations, the client was sold on this forward-looking approach.

By advocating for systems furniture, the team illuminated the path of cost savings while emphasizing the adaptability and tax benefits that systems furniture offered. The challenge itself inspired the solution, leading Quikrete to think differently, embrace change, and envision fresh possibilities. During the process, another opportunity-in-disguise was presented in the form of roll-out towers, and CE’s team resolved it with a custom training room solution and roll-out tower that offered the privacy and flexibility Quikrete was seeking.

The journey also included a memorable visit to CE, a moment that altered perspectives. Quikrete's representatives witnessed workstations' evolution firsthand, realizing how far technology and design had come. This revelation resonated deeply, reinforcing their decision to embrace contemporary solutions. Throughout the process, Quikrete's concerns of cost and durability were met head-on. The team's solutions resulted in workstations that addressed these concerns and exceeded expectations.

A unique aspect of Corporate Environment’s approach was the use of high-quality furniture from manufacturers such as Knoll, Herman Miller, Global, and others. The precision achieved by using Knoll products throughout the offices and workstations resonated perfectly with the client's vision. Value-engineering was another tool employed in areas to keep budgeted dollars where they best made sense, without sacrificing the vision. This, especially with such a design-minded, high-quality client, made the difference to the client between just executing the project versus partnering with them as if their vision AND their dollars were our own.

The project spanned 12 months, from design to installation completion, encompassing several phases. We not only provided top-tier furniture solutions but also integrated architectural solutions including DIRTT’s "Reflect" glass walls with a special 'champagne' finish and sound masking to address sound migration concerns and bring more value-added installation through DIRTT’s prefabricated construction approach.

The strong emphasis on quality presented numerous opportunities for CE to shine. The Corporate Environments team engaged in extensive collaboration sessions, challenging the client to consider fresh possibilities while respecting their preferences. The result was a space that not only met but exceeded the client's expectations. A memorable moment occurred during installation when the client, having faced an attempt by a local competitor to sway his decision, walked into the nearly completed space on a Saturday. Impressed by the transformation, he acknowledged CE's success, stating, "No other dealer could have accomplished this. You all aced it. I love it." This validation was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the CE team.

Despite the initial hurdles, CE came in to deliver exceptional design solutions aligning perfectly with the client's vision. The Parker's Kitchen Headquarters now stands as a great example of how collaboration, innovation, and attention to detail can turn a plain space into functional and aesthetically pleasing, all within a healthy budget.

One of the key challenges faced was the implementation of custom artwork, a new venture for both the client and Elizabeth, CE’s Healthcare Sales Representative. The collaborative process involved numerous design reviews and multiple rounds of samples, ensuring that the artwork not only matched the brand colors but also meshed with the local community by featuring original photography from nearby landmarks.

The team's dedication to thinking about healthcare spaces differently and exploring new possibilities extended beyond artwork. Corporate Environments showcased various upholstery options and design elements, encouraging Aylo Health to step outside the comfort zone of the traditional medical office design while maximizing the use of new and innovative finishes that meet the cleaning and durability requirements of the healthcare field. The result was a space that felt unique, warm, and inviting – characteristics rarely associated with healthcare facilities.

In addition to furniture solutions, the project incorporated non-furniture elements such as lighting, staging, and faux plants. These elements, combined with the team's commitment to providing above-and-beyond services, bridged the gap between medical and hospitality spaces.

A memorable part of the project was a visit to the Leftbank showroom at America's Mart, where the team gained inspiration and handpicked pieces that aligned with Aylo Health's aesthetic goals. This hands-on approach strengthened the collaboration between Aylo and CE and ensured that every element of the design reflected the client's vision.

In the end, this new construction not only met Aylo Health's need for a hospitality-inspired healthcare space but exceeded expectations. The Corporate Environments team demonstrated that with creativity, collaboration, and a willingness to push boundaries, healthcare environments can be reimagined to provide a unique and positive experience for both staff and patients. The project stands as a testament of innovative design in rethinking traditional spaces.

Corporate Environments, guided by its commitment to shape the future and spark innovation through an unmatched client experience, played a pivotal role in the renovation of the Department of Veterans Affairs regional office. The building, constructed in 1999, had not undergone significant updates since its construction. The client's objective was to enhance the building's major infrastructure to elevate customer experience, strengthen security measures, streamline workflow, and ensure adaptability for future growth. This initiative aligns with Corporate Environments' goal to contribute to a dynamic and forward-looking environment for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The challenge was the major infrastructure required upgrading, and the footprint of workstations needed to be condensed to accommodate more employees. Corporate Environments along with design firm, Nelson, Gay Construction, BDR Partners, and Evergreen Workplace Solutions, LLC aimed for a modernized facility with open floor plans, increased visual management, and enhanced connectivity. Special attention was given to updating public contact spaces for a more inviting customer experience.

Corporate Environments facilitated design collaboration with various project partners, adapting to departmental needs and budget constraints. DIRTT demountable walls were employed for adaptability, allowing for changes as needed. Interview rooms, counselor offices, and hearing rooms presented challenges, but CE created custom solutions with Knoll REFF and FCI specials, offering a built-in look with flexibility for future changes. Another challenged encounter was the need for security hardware in different areas that required engineering and approvals from DIRTT. Working with our Architectural Solutions team, CE was able to resolve and implement a cutting-edge design and product. CE engaged in extensive design collaboration to ensure the realization of these design intents.

The project was phased over three years, presenting scheduling and supply challenges; despite this, CE provided the client with a one-stop solution, coordinating with existing furniture timelines, layouts, and blocking needs for overheads. The flexibility and value of DIRTT allowed CE to implement changes seamlessly, without disrupting other trades. This refresh demonstrates CE's commitment to transforming spaces, fostering collaboration, and delivering innovative solutions that cater to the unique needs of its clients.
