U.S. Soccer National Training Center: Building the Future Home of Soccer in America

The U.S. Soccer National Training Center was envisioned as far more than a new headquarters; it was designed to become the operational and cultural home for soccer in the United States. The new campus brings together the U.S. Men's and Women's National Teams, youth development programs, adaptive soccer initiatives, administrative operations, and community engagement under one roof. More than a workplace, the facility serves as a destination for athletes, employees, coaches, donors, partners, and fans while supporting U.S. Soccer's long-term mission to grow the game nationwide.

Funded in part through charitable donations, the project carried an added responsibility: deliver a world-class environment while demonstrating exceptional financial stewardship. Every decision needed to balance performance, flexibility, and design excellence with responsible use of donor dollars.

Year: 2026 | Location: Atlanta | Partners: Gensler, Impact Development

What began as a furniture package quickly evolved into a strategic workplace planning initiative. As employee relocation exceeded initial projections, the project required significant reconfiguration to support a larger workforce without increasing the project budget or compromising the original architectural vision.

U.S. Soccer established several key objectives for the National Training Center:

  • Create a world-class headquarters that reflects the organization's vision and supports future growth.

  • Bring together employees from across the country into one collaborative workplace.

  • Accommodate national team operations, training camps, community programming, and donor engagement.

  • Maximize the value of donor-funded investments while maintaining a premium workplace experience.

However, several significant challenges emerged as the project progressed:

  • The building's architecture and floor core locations had already been finalized before workplace planning began.

  • Employee relocation exceeded original forecasts, requiring additional workstations, private offices, focus rooms, collaboration spaces, and dining capacity.

  • The project budget could not increase despite expanded occupancy needs.

  • The sophisticated design intent established by Gensler needed to remain intact while delivering greater value.

The challenge was not simply furnishing a new building; it was creating a workplace that could support organizational growth within fixed architectural and financial constraints. Corporate Environments partnered with U.S. Soccer and Gensler as a strategic advisor, helping translate evolving workplace needs into practical, high-performing solutions. Rather than treating furniture as the final phase of construction, the team approached the project through the lens of workplace strategy, space optimization, and long-term value.

Corporate Environments focused on delivering measurable business outcomes by:

  • Reprogramming the entire workplace to accommodate additional employees without expanding the building footprint.

  • Optimizing workstation layouts, private offices, collaboration spaces, and circulation while working within immovable floor core locations.

  • Preserving the architectural vision and user experience despite significant programming changes.

  • Developing a procurement strategy that balanced premium design with financial responsibility.

The goal was not simply to solve space challenges; it was to ensure U.S. Soccer could achieve its long-term vision without sacrificing functionality, flexibility, or stewardship of donor funding.

Three key priorities guided the project strategy:

1. Maximize Workplace Capacity: Accommodate a growing employee population by redesigning workplace layouts, increasing efficiency, and creating additional work settings without increasing the project's footprint or budget.

2. Protect Design Integrity: Maintain the sophisticated design intent established by Gensler while adapting the workplace to meet changing organizational requirements and operational needs.

3. Maximize the Value of Every Dollar Invested: Develop a value-engineered procurement strategy that balances aesthetics, durability, and long-term performance while remaining responsible stewards of donor contributions.

One of the project's most significant accomplishments was overcoming major programming changes after the building's infrastructure had already been established. Rather than allowing fixed floor cores to limit flexibility, Corporate Environments collaborated closely with Gensler to develop creative planning solutions that optimized circulation, workplace flow, and space utilization.

At the same time, Corporate Environments leveraged MillerKnoll purchasing volume, manufacturer sponsorship opportunities, and strategic value engineering to dramatically reduce costs while preserving the premium experience envisioned for the facility. The result was substantial savings compared to the original furniture budget estimates, without compromising workplace performance or design quality.

The completed National Training Center delivers measurable business outcomes that extend well beyond the workplace itself:

  • A flexible headquarters capable of supporting future organizational growth.

  • Increased workplace capacity without expanding the building footprint or project budget.

  • Substantial savings through strategic procurement and value engineering.

  • A workplace that supports collaboration, training, donor engagement, and national team operations.

  • A balanced investment strategy featuring iconic statement pieces in key public spaces alongside timeless, durable solutions throughout the remainder of the facility.

  • A destination that reflects U.S. Soccer's commitment to excellence while demonstrating responsible stewardship of donor-funded resources.

Today, the U.S. Soccer National Training Center serves as the organization's operational home and a symbol of its future. More than a workplace, it is a strategic asset designed to strengthen collaboration, support elite athletic performance, enhance the visitor experience, and inspire the next generation of players, coaches, and supporters.

By combining thoughtful workplace strategy, collaborative problem-solving, and disciplined financial stewardship, U.S. Soccer successfully transformed a complex project into a lasting investment, one that will support the organization's mission and continued growth for decades to come.
